What does the Halfwood Press print?
The Halfwood Press is very versatile. You can use it to print: etchings from metal plates; drypoint scratched onto plastic sheets; monoprint painted onto flat surfaces; collages made from materials on cardboard; relief prints cut into wood blocks; engravings on hard woods.
If the Halfwood Press is so portable, is it robust?
The Press has a steel core which gives it strength and through the solid rollers adequate pressure is applied to print beautifully. The Press can be stored in a bookcase and is easily carried around your studio. I have taken a Halfwood Press on three international flights as carry on luggage without any difficulties.
Why is the Halfwood more expensive than similar presses?
Each press is made by hand and finished by hand. The wooden cladding that provides a unique design - no two presses have the same finish - is sanded, waxed and polished by hand. Each press is finished with the name of the new owner and comes with a storage box that contains a set of blankets, information about the press and some special surprises!
What is your relationship with Halfwood Press in Seattle?
The Halfwood Press inventor and Master creator, Prof. Bill Ritchie, invited me over to his workshop in Seattle where I learned to make my first Press. Why not, click here, to see a video showing Bill and I testing my Halfwood Press. Bill has a vision of creating a series of workshops around the world, of Halfwood Press makers who are passionate about keeping the art of etching alive. His website is dripping with loads of useful and interesting information that is well worth a visit..
